Privacy policy
Last updated: 7 October 2026. Covers NotchPixel for Windows.
The short version
NotchPixel collects nothing, sends nothing to us and has no account. Everything it shows is read on your PC and stays there. Weather, calendar, the prices strip, pinned sites, stream chat and lyrics reach the network, and only when you set them up.
On Windows: what the app reads on your PC
- Media playback information that apps report to Windows (title, artist, artwork, position), to show now playing.
- Master volume, screen brightness, battery and power state, to show readouts.
- Connected Bluetooth devices and their reported battery level.
- Whether an app is using your microphone, and whether the microphone is muted, to show the call timer and the mute switch. For this it reads only the state of the device, never its contents. The one time NotchPixel records sound is in a screen recording you start yourself: see below.
- The names and sizes of part-finished download files in your Downloads folder, to show downloads in progress. It does not open them or read what is inside them, and it looks at no other folder.
- Which apps have recently used the microphone or camera, from the usage record Windows already keeps for its own privacy settings, to show the sensor indicator.
- Toast notifications, through the Windows notification listener, only if you allow it in Windows privacy settings and keep the option on in NotchPixel.
- The foreground window, to decide when to shrink or hide the island, and whether the app in front is a game (from where it is installed), to show the game strip.
- What you copy, only while clipboard history is on, to show your recent items. Password managers' copies are skipped.
- Your PC's location, only when you press "Use my location" for the weather, from Windows' own location service and only if location is on for apps in Windows settings.
None of this leaves your computer, apart from the weather lookups and, if you turn lyrics on, the song details described below. Clipboard history is the one thing kept on disk: see what the app stores.
The Mac version
NotchPixel for Mac is in development and not on sale. When it ships, this policy will say what it reads on your Mac before anyone can install it.
The web drawer
The pages you pin or open in the web drawer load directly from those websites, as they would in any browser, and those sites handle your visit under their own privacy policies. Sign-ins and cookies are kept in NotchPixel's own browser storage on your computer. We do not see which pages you open or anything you do on them.
The camera mirror (Windows)
If you open the mirror, NotchPixel asks Windows for your camera and draws the picture on your screen. Frames are held in memory only long enough to be drawn. Nothing is recorded, saved to disk or transmitted.
The camera is opened only while the mirror is on screen and is released the moment you close it or switch to another panel, so your camera light goes out with it. You can turn the mirror off entirely in settings, and Windows' own camera permission applies as it does to any other app.
Screenshots and screen recordings (Windows)
When you take a screenshot or start a screen recording from the island, NotchPixel captures your screen and saves the file on your PC: screenshots in Pictures\Screenshots, recordings in Videos\NotchPixel. While a recording runs, it also records your default microphone into the same file, so your voice is heard over the picture. Windows asks for your permission the first time, and you can turn the microphone off under Launcher in settings.
The microphone is used only while a recording you started is running and is released when it stops. Screenshots and recordings stay on your PC. NotchPixel never uploads or transmits them, and never listens to the sound it records.
When the app does use the network
- Weather, if you choose a place: while you type, the letters go to Open-Meteo's place search; the forecast request carries only the place's coordinates. If you press "Use my location", the coordinates Windows gives, rounded to about a hundred metres, go once to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to get the town's name. No account, no identifier.
- Calendar, if you paste an .ics link: NotchPixel fetches that address to read your events. It goes only to the address you give it.
- Prices strip, if you add symbols: the symbols you typed go to Yahoo Finance (stocks and currency pairs) and CoinGecko (coins) every couple of minutes, to fetch their prices. No account, no identifier.
- Lyrics, if you turn them on: the title, artist, album and length of the song that is playing go to LRCLIB (lrclib.net), a free community lyrics library, once per song, to fetch its words. If the player reports the video's channel as the artist, the artist named in the title is sent instead. No account, no identifier. Lyrics found are kept in memory only while the app runs.
- Pinned sites, if you pin or open a page in the web drawer: the page loads from its own website, as described above.
- Stream chat, if you enter a Twitch or YouTube channel: NotchPixel reads that channel's public chat, the way a viewer's browser would. Twitch is joined as an anonymous guest; YouTube's chat page and its chat updates are fetched for the channel's current live stream. No sign-in, no account and nothing about you is sent, and the app cannot post to the chat. Messages are kept in memory only while the app runs.
Leave these empty and the app makes no requests of its own at all.
What the app stores
Your preferences, in a small settings file in your Windows profile, and a diagnostic log on your computer that you can delete at any time. On Windows, clipboard history is also saved so it survives a restart: encrypted for your Windows account, so the file is unreadable on another account or PC, kept for the hours you choose (ten unless you change it) except the lines you pin, and deleted when you clear the history or turn it off. Removing the app through Settings, Apps removes them.
Updates
NotchPixel from the Microsoft Store updates through the Microsoft Store. A copy of the Windows version installed outside the Store can check a release feed for new versions; that request contains no personal data.
Purchases
If you buy NotchPixel in the Microsoft Store, Microsoft handles the payment and the license and we never receive your card or account details; refunds for those purchases go through Microsoft, from your order history at account.microsoft.com/billing/orders.
Children
NotchPixel is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age.
This website
If you join the waitlist we store the email address you give us, only to tell you when NotchPixel for Mac is ready. No tracking scripts, no advertising cookies. Email info@notchpixel.live to be removed.
If you arrive through a partner's link, the partner's code is kept in your browser's local storage for 30 days and added to the Microsoft Store links on this site, so the Store can credit that partner with a sale. It is not sent to us and holds nothing about you. If you send the page from your phone to your PC, the link you send carries the code too, so the partner is credited there. Clearing your browser data removes it.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page with a new date at the top.
